Breast Reduction Information
Breast reduction - or reduction mammoplasty - is a popular procedure for the reduction of overly large, heavy breasts. This surgery involves the removal of excess breast tissue, fat, and skin, and the reshaping of remaining tissues into a smaller, more proportional breast contour. Typically, enlarged areolas are reduced during this procedure as well, creating a more pleasing appearance. Breast reduction patients may experience improvements in multiple symptoms associated with oversized breasts, including:
- Back and neck pain
- Deep shoulder grooves from bra straps
- Skin rashes beneath the breasts
- Poor posture
- Limitations on exercise
- Unwanted attention or social discomfort
- Difficulty finding clothing that fits
Due to the number of physical concerns associated with large breasts, health insurance often covers all or part of the cost of New Hampshire breast reduction surgery.
Procedural Options
Breast reduction surgery is similar to breast lift in that it uses the same incision methods for the removal of tissue. However, breast reduction involves the removal of more breast tissue and fat, in addition to skin, and typically requires more sculpting and re-shaping to form the new, smaller breast contour. In general, Dr. Sepic will utilize one of the following approaches:
- The anchor incision or inverted "T" technique is the most frequently used incision for breast reduction surgery, as it allows for the most extensive re-shaping and repositioning of the breasts. In this approach, the incision encircles the areola, descends vertically to the chest wall, then runs along the inframammary fold, forming the shape of an anchor. This method allows Dr. Sepic to remove fat, breast tissue, and skin, as well as elevate and sculpt the new breast into a pleasing, proportional shape. The nipple is moved to a higher placement on the chest, and may be reduced in size, but in most cases is left attached to nerves and blood supply to maintain its viability and functionality.
- The lollipop or vertical incision technique is a more limited incision option for women who require less extensive reduction. This incision encircles the areola, then descends vertically to form the shape of a lollipop. Through this approach, Dr. Sepic can remove a moderate amount of fat, breast tissue, and skin, and re-shape the breast into a smaller, more pleasing shape.
Dr. Sepic will work with you to determine the approach that is best suited for your particular anatomy and goals. Breast reduction is often combined with additional body contouring procedures such as liposuction or abdominoplasty - options which Dr. Sepic can discuss with you at your consultation.
Typically, breast reduction surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. Your recovery will be closely monitored for several weeks, but you should be able to return to light activities within a few days.
