Body Contouring after Weight Loss

More and more Americans are making lifestyle changes or undergoing medical procedures such as gastric bypass to achieve dramatic weight loss. The result is a vast improvement in overall health and wellbeing, in addition to a sense of pride and accomplishment. However, in many cases excess, stretched skin and residual fat can limit your ability to enjoy the results of your hard-earned weight loss.

Dr. Jerome Sepic is a New Hampshire plastic surgeon with advanced training in surgical procedures for weight loss patients. At his Portsmouth cosmetic surgery practice, he helps patients from New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Maine to complete the process of transforming their bodies.

Post Weight Loss Procedures

Many men and women find that, after significant weight loss, they are left with folds of loose, hanging skin that do not respond to diet or exercise. To fully achieve the healthy, trim appearance they desire, many patients must undergo one or more of the following procedures to contour the skin and tissue to conform to their body's new shape.

Body Lift

The lower body lift procedure treats the entire midsection - buttocks, hips, thighs, abdomen, and waist - in one surgery. An incision that encircles the torso removes a band of excess skin and fat. Dr. Sepic then repositions and tightens underlying tissues and support structures. In many cases, liposuction will be used for the removal of residual fat deposits, as well as to improve the shape of the lower body. There are several incision types for this procedure, and Dr. Sepic will help you to determine which approach is right for your particular needs. Minimizing scarring and inconspicuous incision placement are always priorities.

Breast Lift

Many women who have experienced significant weight loss are left with sagging, deflated breasts. Breast lift surgery - or mastopexy - removes excess skin and tissue to create firmer, higher, more youthful looking breasts. Many women who choose breast lift surgery also undergo a New Hampshire breast enlargement at the same time, using implants to restore volume to their newly lifted breasts.

Buttock Lift

For women in particular, the outer thighs and buttocks are often left with significant sagging and redundant skin after dramatic weight loss. This procedure addresses these areas by removing the excess skin and residual fat, and lifting and repositioning remaining tissue. Many plastic surgeons in New Hampshire perform this procedure in conjunction with a thigh lift for optimal re-shaping of the lower body.

Thigh Lift

Excess, sagging skin on the upper legs can be unattractive as well as a nuisance. Patients with this condition often suffer irritation and chafing. Thigh lift surgery eliminates excess skin and fat in this area through carefully placed incisions in the natural folds of the groin or beneath the buttocks, depending on which areas are being lifted. Sometimes liposuction is used for further sculpting of the remaining tissue, which will appear tighter and smoother after surgery.

Tummy Tuck

Also known as abdominoplasty, this surgical procedure can help individuals with a lax, sagging midsection to have a slimmer, more attractive waistline. A tummy tuck consists of the removal of excess skin, tightening of separated muscles, and in most cases, liposuction for the removal of fatty deposits. A full abdominoplasty treats the entire expanse of the abdomen.

Arm Lift

Many weight loss patients are left with excess, hanging upper arm skin that is both unsightly and cumbersome. Surgery to tighten the tissue and remove the excess skin can eliminate discomfort and embarrassment. Incisions for the arm lift procedure typically run between the armpit and the elbow, along the inside of the upper arm. In some cases, liposuction may be used to further sculpt and refine the results of the arm lift procedure.
