Eyelid Surgery in New Hampshire

Many people experience the first noticeable signs of aging in the eye area. This is partially because the skin in the eye area is thin and delicate, and almost constantly exposed to the elements. Since the eyes are such an integral part of our facial expressions, smiling, laughing, and squinting also can contribute to the creation of lines and wrinkles in this area. These factors, along with heredity, can result in loose, wrinkled, or puffy skin in the upper and lower lids.

Dr. Jerome Sepic is a Portsmouth plastic surgeon specializing in eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) for New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Maine residents to remove excess skin and fat from the upper and lower lids. Through eyelid surgery - or blepharoplasty - Dr. Sepic can restore a bright, youthful appearance to the eye area.

Eyelid Surgery Techniques

Drooping, hooded, or puffy eyelids can make you feel prematurely aged, and can have an adverse effect on your self-confidence and your interactions with others. Eyelid surgery is a relatively straightforward procedure that can produce dramatic results. As one of the more recently trained plastic surgeons in New Hampshire, Dr. Sepic brings advanced blepharoplasty techniques to the Seacoast area and surrounding communities in New England. Typically, he will utilize one of the following approaches, or a combination procedure including a face lift or brow lift, to restore a vibrant, natural appearance to the eye area.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

Upper eyelid surgery involves making a small, well-concealed incision to remove excess, sagging skin from the area beneath the brow. If the brow itself is sagging, then blepharoplasty alone will not correct this problem, and a brow lift may be the appropriate procedure.

The incision for upper eyelid lift is made in the eyelid crease, extending just past the corner of the eye into the existing folds of skin. Through this incision, a crescent of excess skin is removed, and fat is either repositioned or removed to decrease any existing puffiness. The result is an upper eye area that appears "opened-up," and rejuvenated.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

Lower eyelid surgery can be performed in either a "traditional" manner or with a newer "scarless" approach, depending on your desired outcome. The traditional method utilizes a very small incision that runs along the lower lash line. Through this incision, excess skin can be removed and fat can be repositioned or removed to create a more youthful appearance. Occasionally, Dr. Sepic will make adjustments to correct lid laxity in the lower eye region. Lower eyelid incisions heal very nicely, and become practically undetectable over time.

In the absence of significant wrinkling or excess skin, Dr. Sepic can utilize the transconjunctival or "scarless" technique by placing an incision inside the lower lid. This approach is highly effective for the repositioning or removal of fatty tissue which contributes to a puffy, tired-looking area under the eye.

The Next Step

The eyes and the entire eye area are a key feature of our expressions and our communication with others. If you are unhappy with sagging, puffy, or wrinkled skin around the eyes, eyelid surgery may be an effective option for you. However, it is important that surgery on this delicate and critical area be performed by a well-trained surgeon who will make your satisfaction and cosmetic results his ultimate goal.
