What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure which permanently removes fat from the body by suctioning it out through a small vacuum tube called a cannula. This procedure is ideal for removing areas of fat that have proven difficult to eliminate through diet and exercise, or areas that accumulate fat as you age. Such "trouble spots" include the abdomen, flanks, hips, buttocks, thighs, back, upper arms, neck and chin.

Liposuction should not be viewed as a weight loss tool, but as a means of removing isolated fatty deposits in patients who are at or near a healthy weight. Liposuction is commonly performed to enhance the results of other surgical procedures, such as abdominoplasty and face lift.

Dr. Sepic offers his Portsmouth, New Hampshire liposuction patients an advanced technique called tumescent liposuction. This involves infusing the area to be treated with large volumes of a solution of anesthetic, saline, and epinephrine. This causes the fatty tissue to become swollen, making it easier to remove and allowing for more precise fat removal and less disruption of surrounding tissue. This also has the effect of minimizing post-surgical bruising, swelling, and discomfort. Using the tumescent technique allows Dr. Sepic to not only remove larger volumes of fat, but also to perform more precise sculpting of the treatment area.

New Hampshire Liposuction Procedure & Recovery

Liposuction can be performed using either local or general anesthesia, depending on the size of the area to be treated. Dr. Sepic will make tiny incisions through which he will insert the liposuction cannula. As Dr. Sepic carefully moves the cannula through the tissue, he does not simply remove fat, but he sculpts and contours the area to provide natural, aesthetically pleasing results.

You will return home from your procedure with stitches in your incision sites, as well as a compression garment to ease swelling and promote healing. There will be some swelling and discomfort, which may be managed with either over the counter or prescription pain medication. Dr. Sepic will closely monitor your post-operative swelling and the healing of your incisions over the next several weeks, and will advise you as to when you can stop wearing your compression garment and return to regular activities. Most patients are able to return to normal activities within 1 or 2 weeks, and may begin to show off their results shortly thereafter.
